Prospect Weekly: Episode I

Welcome to a new series I’m excited to bring to Burgundy Rainbow. Each and every week I aim to update on all things prospect related. All the origination’s prospects won’t get reviewed every week, we’ll save that for a periodic review. This is more to highlight the stories surrounding our prospects and their teams. The goal is also to inform when events are upcoming or especially when there’s something that can be seen on tv.

So let’s get to it!

Nick Leivermann is the standout this week scoring his first BCHL goal and also added an assist. Nice job and keep it going!

The rest of the prospect seasons will get into full swing this weekend with Conor Timmins back in Sault Ste. Marie and the NCAA exhibition schedule beginning.

Speaking of, Cale Makar is finally going to take the ice with UMass as they take on Queens University in an exhibition match on Saturday, September 30th. Here’s a little bling he recieved for winning all the awards in the AJHL last season.

Shoutout to almost prospect Ty Lewis who upon his return to the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL proceeded to put up a 2G, 3A night and added 2A for good measure the following evening. His signing window has likely passed but good for him making a statement to open his season after a strong showing in Avalanche camp.

Finally, here’s how the CHL is looking heading into its second weekend of action.

Regina will need their regulars back soon if they want to hold on to the top ranking. Good to see the Greyhounds holding top 10. And look at an old friend appearing as an Honorable Mention.

Please let me know what you’d like to see more of!

  1. Question on Lewis: is he draft eligible or do the Avs somehow hold his rights?

He was somewhat over his head in the rookie showcase and at camp but I could see potential there. I’m hoping the Avs haven’t missed out on developing him in some way.

    1. No, any rights they had likely expired when he went back to junior. He will need to go through the draft again. The Avs could revisit next summer if he isn’t drafted but would probably require a contract. Guys don’t get invited by the same team multiple years, he would look for another opportunity.

I think he showed well enough to consider developing further as a prospect. He was over his head in the preseason game but the fact that he even got to one as a junior invite speaks to how well he showed in camp. You can’t really realistically ask for more if the team was looking to sign someone.
