Five Avalanche Prospects Named to Preliminary WJC Rosters

‘Tis the season for the World Junior Championship. Puck drops begins in less than a month and the final step in preparation for the event is the naming of preliminary rosters. Several Avalanche prospects made the cut and are vying to make final rosters before the tournament begins on December 26th. As a reminder, those who are 1998 born players such as Cale Makar and Conor Timmins are no longer eligible for the tournament.

Martin Kaut – Czech Republic ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

A lock to make the team and play a big role, Kaut will likely play on the top line and reunite with his buddy Martinย Necas. Those playing professional in North America will always need permission from their organization to attend but Kaut already has the green light from the Avalanche. The Czechs could be one of the more exciting teams to watch this year.

Shane Bowers – Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

The most difficult roster to make among the Avalanche prospects selected, Bowers still has an uphill battle to make the team. What works in his favor is the fact that he’s one of the older forwards, particularly at center, and can fill in as a dependable defensive player on a lower line. Politics are always a big factor in making team Canada but it is a good sign he was included on the cap roster despite not lighting up the boxscore with BU this year.

Sampo Ranta – Finland ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎ

Finland named a thin group of forwards with some long shot hope of recieving NHL help so it seems Ranta has a good shot to stick with the team. He can play a versatile third line type role with some power play opportunities in order to work toward a larger role next year in his final year of eligibility.

Nikolai Kovalenko and Danila Zhuravlyov – Russia ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ

As expected, Kovalenko recieved an invite to the a Team Russia camp after establishing himself in the KHL and a strong showing in the recent Four Nations tournament. A mild surprise is the inclusion of Zhuravlyov. As an 18-year old he will have to fight to make the team but played a large role in the Canada-Russia series and has been a staple on multiple national teams and likely has favor with the coaching staff.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting holiday season for fans of Avalanche prospects.
