Prospect Weekly: Greering up for the Playoffs

Tyler Weiss finished off his regular season with a goal and assist in Omaha’s 5-4 overtime loss to North Dakota. On the goal Weiss showed his feisty nature and pounced on a loose puck in the crease. The assist seen below is a quick pass which finds a teammate in stride for a goal. After missing the first month of the season Weiss has played in 23 games registering ten points but four of those came in his last three contests.

NCAA Playoffs

Although several preliminary rounds of conference playoffs began this past week, the NCAA postseason schedule gets going significantly this weekend. All Avalanche prospects will participate in at least the next round as follows.

Hockey East:

Cale Makar and UMass are going to use the conference tournament as a tune-up for the NCAA tournament as they had a strong enough regular season for an auto-bid.

New Hampshire at Massachusetts. Best of three series begins Friday, March 15th.

Shane Bowers and BU are in the opposite camp, they will need to win the conference tournament as they did last year to get a spot in the big show.

Boston University at UMass Lowell. Best of three series begins Friday, March 15th.

Big Ten:

Notre Dame swept Michigan State in the first round of their conference playoffs. Cam Morrison, Nate Clurman and Nicky Leivermann all move on to face Sampo Ranta and Minnesota, who swept Michigan in their own series. Notre Dame is on the bubble and needs a strong showing to make it to the NCAA tournament. Minnesota will likely need to win the conference to advance.

Minnesota at Notre Dame. Single game elimination on Saturday, March 16th at 7pm ET on Big Ten Network.

Penn State and Denis Smirnov needed three games to defeat Wisconsin and move on to meet conference leading Ohio State who enjoyed a bye week leading into the semi-finals. Like Minnesota, Penn State likely needs a conference tournament win to attend the NCAA tournament.

Penn State at Ohio State. Single game elimination on Sunday, March 17th at 3:30pm ET on Big Ten Network.

NCHC:

It was a trying year for Omaha and Tyler Weiss but the young squad gets the experience of the conference playoffs taking on a top ranked team in Minnesota-Duluth.

Omaha at Minnesota-Duluth. Best of three series begins on Friday, March 15th.

Back to the pro side of the game, Josh Dickinson was called back up to the Colorado Eagles mid-week but before doing so he helped the Utah Grizzlies defeat the Maine Mariners in a 4-3 overtime game. Dickinson puts in an incredible individual effort seen below for the game winning goal. He has 26 points in 29 games in his time with the with the Grizzlies.

The Colorado Eagles continued their winning streak over the weekend as they took to the road and shut out San Diego in a 24 save effort from Pavel Francouz. Dominic Toninato got the lone goal seen below on a tip play and the Eagles sealed the victory 1-0.

In the following evening the Eagles would once again shut out San Diego on a 2-0 score this time and a 28 save performance from Spencer Martin. The now six-game winning streak and the Eagles sitting seven points into a playoff spot should be the story of the weekend but AJ Greer had his game turned up a notch and had a hand in all three goals scored in the series. In this contest Greer had a blistering shot tipped by Tim McGauley for the first goal of the game and then Greer added an insurance goal late in the game on an absolutely filthy move on a breakaway as seen below. He’s certainly making it difficult on the Avalanche to keep him out of the NHL.
